New program teaches students communication, leadership skills
CENTER FOCUS, Spring, 1999
"The intent of the program is simple. For participants to have fun on this journey to self-discovery and self-development. To successfully learn and apply the concepts into their every-day lives. And, to discover how to improve their lives, now and in the future, in any areas they may choose."
Rowena Crosbie, Tero International
Dowling High School students now have the unique opportunity to study and develop critical life skills thanks to a new program called Outstanding in Life: A Life Skills Program for Young People.
Outstanding in Life is a non-traditional approach to learning that goes beyond the standard high school experience. The program, a product of Tero International Inc., offers skill-building in five areas: personal communication, leadership, personal effectiveness, relating, and building community. It is being funded through private donations and is free to students interested in investing extra time in their personal development.
During the curriculum, students discover that all of the skills necessary for success in life are conveniently located inside themselves, according to "Tero President ROWENA CROSBIE. They will gain a clear picture of themselves, their self image, attitudes, strengths and abilities, development areas, interests, potential, goals and surroundings. The courses are presented dynamically using short lectures, group and individual activities, multi-sensory learning, colorful visuals and props, music, games and more. All concepts and techniques are presented from the students' perspective and are immediately applicable to help students reach goals and tackle challenges.
Dowling Sophomore TIFFANY SUMMY has completed the first class, "Personal Communication Skills" and is enthusiastic about participating in the remaining four, despite the fact that they are held outside of regular school hours. Tiffany says she is already applying many of the skills taught in the class having to do with conflict resolution, speaking in front of large groups, and dealing with stress.
"I think everyone can benefit from this program," says Tiffany. "in class we are put in different situations, and then we learn how to handle them. If you put someone who hasn't taken the class in the same situation, I don't think they would handle it as well."
