Welcome to the Tero November eZine
In an article titled "Why Social Media is Destroying Our Social Skills", research sites one in four people spend more time socializing online, via sites such as Facebook and Twitter, than they do in person.
The study also found that even when there is an opportunity to see people face-to-face, on weekends, up to 11% of adults still prefer to stay at home and communicate on their devices instead.
Studies show technology use has resulted in our face-to-face communication patterns becoming briefer, self-initiated, and less focused on patience and listening. As a result we are also forgetting common social communication cues that make conversation satisfying and polite. What does that mean in terms of who we are becoming as conversationalists and as people?
This month we examine considerations on conversation. Considerations of new conversation patterns technology may be providing us, and the patterns and cues of face to face communications we won't want to lose. What power lies in using our voice and retaining our ability to be engaging conversationalists when communicating face to face?
