Welcome to the Tero July eZine
According to the When Helicopter Parents Hover Even at Work article in the New York Times, 30% of 725 employers surveyed in a 2007 Michigan State study reported parents submitting resumes for their adult aged children. 15% reported fielding complaints from parents when their adult aged child wasn’t hired, and 10% of parents got actively involved in salary and benefit negotiations. This study highlighted the beginning of a new era of parenting.
The age of the helicopter parent is over a decade old, and doesn't appear to be lessening any time soon. The article also cited that Office Team, a division of Robert Half has noted several instances in 2016 where parents piped into job interviews on Skype, scheduled their child's interviews and came along in person.
This change can be confounding to generations raised to be self-sufficient by age 21. Yet it is reality in 2017. Some shake their heads at it and others have tried to figure out ways to embrace it. LinkedIn and Cornerstone on Demand were quoted in the article to both be on their fifth year of Bring Your Parents to Work Day. What used to be bring your child to work has shifted to include what companies were finding is a more common expectation and occurrence, parents showing up to watch their child work.
Trend or cultural shift? Individualism, one of the primary values of U.S. culture doesn't support helicopter parenting, yet we see evidence of it daily in the U.S. business climate and it doesn't look as if it is going away anytime soon. Do you hate the idea of this trend or do you embrace it?
This month we take a look at various trends we have a choice to hate or embrace in the work place. Or perhaps find a happy medium of acceptance.
