Welcome to the Tero July eZine
Could fish like Nemo and Dory really have a greater attention span than humans? In a Forbes article on the Top 10 Business Trends for 2016, author Ian Altman states that the human attention span is 8 seconds. Goldfish, the fish studied in the research and definitely related to our movie star fish have an attention span of 9 seconds! Really? Longer than humans?
It's true. To address an attention span that is less than a goldfish, businesses are devising strategies to transfer knowledge to people who cannot attend to one concept for very long without competing stimuli. One such attempt is gamification.
Gamification, which has become a new business buzzword addresses ways to make learning business concepts engaging, fun and interactive. The definition of gamification, "the application of typical elements of game playing (e.g., point scoring, competition with others, rules of play) to other areas of activity" show it is not a new learning concept.
Today, the buzzword is linked mainly to technological methods of learning. Yet the 'gaming' concept applies to anything that makes the learner interact in a slightly competitive situation that involves learning information. Gaming allows the learner to hit goals and create "wins". Examples of non-technological gamification such as structured role playing, and simulations have been around for years. They get people involved and invested. They help people learn. They work. How do we know? Tero has been in business for over two decades focused on interactive learning to create "wins" in behavioral goals for interpersonal skills.
This month we devote our eZine to ideas and methodology for hitting goals and creating "wins". The Q and A discusses how to get back our attention and motivation for work, as well as assessing organizational needs in times of change. The feature article challenges the notion that all things are best learned via technology. Would we attend to things longer if indeed the learning was done face to face in real-time? The Development Activity describes the power of small wins. The resources and inspiration will provide you with ideas for changing things up to satisfy your need to focus and to create an antidote to counteract any side-effects of our miniscule 8 second human attention span.
