Welcome to the Tero May eZine
Andreas Heinecke, a social entrepreneur was in his first job at a radio station in 1988. In the March/April 2017 edition of the Harvard Business review, the article "Bursting the CEO Bubble" relates that in this first job, Heinecke was asked to train a young journalist who was blind. Heinecke was challenged about how to train someone without eyesight. But this wasn’t his only challenge. He discovered how many personal stereotypes he held about people with disabilities. That discovery made him uncomfortable with himself, and led him to seek to understand something he had no knowledge of or experience in. This passion actually influenced the rest of his career. He eventually built the business Dialogue in the Dark, an organization that employs blind guides to take 800,000 visitors a year through exhibits and workshops on what it means to be sightless.
What Andreas was able to change was his frame of reference. Until he was tasked to train someone he didn’t think he could relate to, he was operating in a personal frame of reference that was limited. In the article it suggests that CEOs (and we can extend that to all of us) are trapped in a bubble. Rarely do we talk with people that make us uncomfortable, or place ourselves in situations like Andres found himself in that make us uncomfortable. Yet wouldn't that inform our frame of reference? And change what we were capable of doing and managing?
This month's eZine addresses frame of reference, and the opportunities we have on a daily basis to enlarge it. The Q and A poses questions on enlarging our frame of reference when we now have to manage people who were formerly colleagues, and also what to do if you are stuck in an office environment with someone that distracts you. The development activity gives us a tool to imprint ourselves to maintain positive questioning attitudes when placed in situations that require us to enlarge our frame of reference. The article is a favorite chapter from the book co-authored by Rowena Crosbie and Deborah Rinner, Your Invisible Tool Box: The Technological Ups and Interpersonal Downs of the Millennial Generation. The chapter is titled "Mind the Gap" and features the tool of inquiry to assist us in maximizing our frame of reference. The resources are sure to enlighten us as to various ways we can challenge our frame of reference, and we close with an inspiration.
We are always seeking at Tero to enlarge our frame of reference with regard to you, our readers. Please reach out and tell us what matters to you, either on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or send your ideas to ideas@yourinvisibletoolbox.com. It is only through inquiry and exchange of ideas that we become more knowledgeable, experienced and considerate of what matters, and change our frame of reference.
