I Have No Chemistry With Executive Coach

Question:

What do I do if I realize that there is no chemistry between me and my executive coach? How can I end the sessions?

Tero says:

Objectively evaluate the relationship. What is going well? What isn't working? Are your concerns accurate? Or, are you looking for an excuse to end the coaching to avoid the discomfort or making challenging changes?

After you've talked to yourself, talk to your coach. Focus on goals and not on personal characteristics. A skilled coach will handle this professionally. If your coach becomes defensive, this individual may not be suited to help you in the pursuit of your goals.

How do I prevent getting into the uncomfortable situation of having the wrong executive coach?.

Plan ahead!

Meet with your coach prior to entering a coaching relationship. See how you feel about working with this person. Ask questions. Address the "what ifs" during this initial discussion.

What if I want to end the coaching relationship? What if my goals aren't being achieved? Insist on a termination clause in the contract if one isn't already there. By agreeing on the expectations and negotiating the "what ifs" ahead of time, contract termination is much simpler.
