Ask Tero

What steps should I take if I witness prejudice or discrimination in the workplace?

Question:

Is it appropriate to share my workplace fears with my supervisor? If so, how do I go about doing that?

Tero says:

First ask yourself is the fear based in the reality of your work experiences? If there is a situation and example you can give of something real causing you to fear, and the fear relates to work and performance it may be appropriate. If however in analyzing your fear you realize it is simply a feeling you have, then it is yours to handle and address and not the responsibility of others. Use caution expressing fear. Most often fear is false evidence appearing real. The best antidote and solution lies in self analysis, and inappropriately disclosing fears unfounded in work experiences may indicate an inability to self regulate emotions.
