Handshakes and Sweaty Palms

Professional Polish Tip from Deborah Rinner

Yesterday we responded to Doug's question about messing up a handshake. We encouraged continuing with the greeting and not attempting a "do over". Today we address his follow-up question, "What if my hands are sweating, should I still shake hands?"

Yes, you should still shake hands.

The actual hand connection is not what the handshake is about. The greeting has many elements including eye contact and posture preceding it and eye contact and conversation following it. It is effective when we are consciously present and paying attention to the other person.

Don't sweat having sweaty palms! Remember that antiperspirants work on hands and foreheads, too.
