More Considerations for Doing Business Cross Culturally

Professional Polish Tip from Deborah Rinner

Yesterday we discussed the first consideration to prevent insulting someone from a different culture. Today we will look at the second one.

Be sure to learn about the generalized values of the culture you will be doing business with.

For example, if you are a US business professional in Japan, you might notice people bowing. It is important for you to be aware and understand why that culture believes in bowing. The value of respect of hierarchy is a strong value in Japan and drives that behavior.

If you are aware of a culture's values, it helps you monitor your own behavior. You do not need to imitate and bow, but you do need to find culturally appropriate ways to demonstrate respect if you want to be perceived positively.
