Offering Your Business Card to an Executive

Professional Polish Tip from Deborah Rinner

"I met the CEO of an organization I hope to work for someday" says Carla. "I know it is not appropriate to offer my card to someone in a higher role than myself, but I would like to provide my contact information. Is there an appropriate way to do this?"

You are correct in not offering your card. It is disrespectful to offer your card to someone in a higher role unless they ask for it.

However, you can send it enclosed in a thank you note. Use the note to convey sincere thanks for the opportunity to talk, rather than asking for something or describing your goals.

One other tip: Use a pen with black ink and a fine quality paper note card. This conveys your professionalism and will leave a good impression.
