Protocol Tips for Business Travel to Singapore

Professional Polish Tip from Deborah Rinner

Yesterday we discussed how to approach international business in India. Today we will talk about protocol and culture of Singapore.

The first thing to consider when doing international business is greeting styles. In Singapore handshakes are common. A gentle clasp lasting 10 to 12 seconds is ideal.

It is acceptable for women to shake hands with both sexes, but they may be expected to initiate the gesture.

You may wish to wait for your Singaporean counterparts to initiate the handshake before you extend your hand. In both the traditional Malay and Indian cultures, religion dictates a more reserved greeting - a slight bow with the palms of the hands together, as if you were praying.
