When the Greeting is a Hug

Professional Polish Tip from Ro Crosbie

Lauren has a client who always greets her with a hug. Lauren worries that this is not appropriate but does not know how to address the issue.

This is a practical concern even with the great relationship you've obviously built with your client. Prepare yourself by preserving personal space. In the US, this is 18 inches of space between you and the other person. Hugs challenge that personal space and can be uncomfortable.

However, you don't want to seem rude and pull away. Accept but do not initiate. After the hug step back on your right foot and extend your hand in a handshake to finish the interaction in a professional manner. This is especially important when you are greeting several people.
